BOOK REVIEW

There's a spiritual solution to every problem

by Wayne Dyer. HarperCollins, 2001

Written in a lively down to earth style, this book can be used as a tool to help you focus and unify the spiritual and the physical dimensions in solving every day problems.

The core idea of the book is: everything in our universe is nothing more than energy. You, the coffee cup in your hand, the Taj Mahal in India and the thought about what to cook for dinner tonight is each a form of energy, vibrating at a certain frequency. Slower frequencies appear more solid - and become the energy field where our problems show up, while higher frequencies such as light and thought are more invisible. The higher frequencies are simply referred to as spirit. Bringing higher energy in to solve problems encased in the lower slower energy field will nullify and dissipate those things we identify as problems.

Perhaps a personal account may clarify what is meant by using higher vibrational energy to dissipate lower vibrational energy. When Andrea first picked up this book, she thought: Oh, yeah, what's the deal here? She was physically tired and emotionally on empty, having gone through a sudden 'relationship breakdown' which she found difficult to explain. Viewing the problem of relationship breakdown, she was focusing on the person and on herself - ie. flaws in  personality or biases in actions. Looking for flaws or what was wrong in being together was doing more damage than good - leading to more blame shame remorse and reaction. In despair, she chose intuitively to connect to a higher level theme: forgiveness love gratitude and trust that what was/is happening serves her highest good. She began to feel some peace.

Then Andrea discovered Dyer's book which expands upon her personal experience in a way that allows her to integrate a spiritual approach to problem solving more fully. She is now learning conscious problem solving. When  in a confused mental and emotional space, she steps back or transcends the problem by identifying who she really is - a spiritual being having a human experience that is passing. This helps her move through suffering in a period of days, rather than weeks. In Andrea's words: "I feel more grateful and caring towards the person who is teaching me these lessons. I feel generally happier, trusting in a higher good - no mean feat when I've always considered my mental/intellectual capacity one of my stronger assets!"

Let's take a closer look at Wayne Dyer's experience of who he truly is. In 2000, he had just written this book. Then the unexpected happened. A heart condition brought him face to face with his mortality and the possibility of losing all that was dear in his life. He was in a state of shock and disbelief. Yet, it occurred to him, that he could bring the energy of spirit into the hospital room. Put into practice even more finely what he, as one of the most influential contemporary spiritual teachers, has been teaching for many years. He would observe what was happening, not be a victim of what was happening, and plug into the divine within, not the material world.

So, how do you plug into the divine or spiritual to solve your current problem? First of all, you need to understand the principles behind problem solving with spirit. This is covered in the first half of the book - learning to understand what energy is, exploring how to give energy to the things you are for, rather than against, and raising and sustaining this higher vibrational energy in your everyday encounters whether they cover health, financial worries or relationship difficulties. The second half of the book, 'Putting spiritual problem solving into action' is organised around the prayer of St Francis of Assisi, and contains specific suggestions to help us put spiritual problem solving into practice.
